YES, the off-season is NOT THE TIME to be at your best performance, but instead--the off-season is your time to
LAY THE FOUNDATION of your best performance in the near future.

For most, the off-season represents a time of 'misguided information' of traditional weight training in the gym, along with pointless 'base miles' out in the cold that yield minimal results. OR WORSE, being locked inside like a hamster on a spinning wheel--but going nowhere!

COMMON MISTAKE #1: No defined off-season goals and trying to improve everything with little focus!

Just because your season is over and it may be another six months before your next big ride, century, or race--that doesn't mean you shouldn't have defined goals. The biggest mistake you can make in the off-season is not being FOCUSED on one or two primary objectives. YES, only a few goals is best. Off-season is NOT a time to try to improve EVERYTHING!

STEP 1: SET GOALS...OFTEN!


  
You need to pick 1-2 SHORT TERM GOALS for each week, plus select a 1-2 MICRO GOALS for each month and finally, 1-2 MACRO GOALS for the entire off-season. Be SPECIFIC!

Yes, pick your goals for next season, that helps give you a long term vision of what you want, but sometimes that long term vision can turn into anxiety in the short term as you try to do too much, too quick. When you set goals each week or heck, even everyday you are likely to achieve them and keep your progress moving forward.

Goal Setting Examples:

"I will eat 5-6 small, balanced meals each day--consistently." (WEEKLY GOAL)

"I will increase my pedal action smoothness by the end of the month so I can maintain 100 RPM with ease." (MICRO GOAL)

"I will be 172 pounds by the end of my 12 week off-season (8 pound weight loss) and be able to complete the 8 Minute Power Routine three times without break." (MACRO GOALS)

*QUICK TIP 1: You will be more successful in the off-season when you only focus on a few things to overcome other than stating, "I want to improve everything!". The only way to improve is to FOCUS on one thing at a time.
