Tour of the Battenkill PART 1 Prep.
with Graeme Street

Is Tour of the Battenkill the Best Ride in America?

The Dec/Jan issue of Bicycling Magazine seems to think so. It's now considered the American version of the famous Paris-Roubaix with back-crushing steep hills, rolling farm-land, gravel roads, cow-bells, and the turbulent spring time weather of rural New York (not France).

So, is Battenkill "America's Queen of the Classics" as it deems itself?

Well, I'm not sure it's going to be quite on the same level as Paris-Roubaix as far as distance and prestige (yet), but so the heck what! This event looks brutally hard and challenging for any rider and I hear it's one heck of a great energy there. My best friend, Big Tim placed second last year in his Masters Cat 5 and said it's a must do!

I'm already focusing my efforts on placing in my category. Granted I'll only be racing the lowly Cat 5 Under 35 (racers, insert snivel here), but who cares--I hear this course is a monster with a few hills getting riders off their bikes and PRO riders from around the world expected to be at the starting line.

Sounds like my kind of ride. I've got my expected training schedule using Cyclo-CORE Training DVD's and Cyclo-CLUB Resources & Modules/Bootcamps for those that are interested.

Potential competitors, please ignore what you see. Heck, just hit the back button will ya!

I know from what I hear from Big Tim and others that climbing, muscular endurance, recovery-intervals, dropping winter weight and mental toughness are needed to place in the race. That and some heavy-duty tires and wheels.

I can hardly wait until April now. Ah, the power of a goal that scares the %$#@! out of you;) This isn't my BIG RIDE of the year, or is it? What do you think?

I'll be doing several updates on my lead-up and interviews with club members that I hope to meet (and be pushed by) while I'm there! If you're going, let me know. I'll be the guy at the front, looking green.

This race is epic. The roubaix style makes it like no other road race. It will be my third year doing it, and my first year with an actual training plan! Sadly though Men's cat 5 sold out is seconds. My husband didn't get in for the third year in a row, and tried to register right when it opened. Unfortunetly I bet a lot of us are cat 5 racers. Book housing now- you will find most places booked solid already. The first year I did it, it was 95 degrees on April 19th! The second year it poured rain and was freezing cold, I might even remember some snow flurries. They have moved the amateures up a week- so it may be even colder. Expect awesome spectators along the way, exceptional scenery, and killer riding. See you there!

Killer Race, December 22, 2009

Graeme,

The ToB was my last race as a Cat 5 it was definitly an epic, there are so many things that come into play the most important I think is bike handling skills. The first major obstacle is Juniper Swamp Road it is an 18% or so grade and its on the dirt, if you stand you spin if your not over your bottom bracket you spin out you basically have to sit back in the saddle and stay seated, then you have the dirt road decents. Anyhow, it was a great experience and will do it every chance I get. I am doing it as a cat 4 this year and there are 375 in the Cat 4 Catagories so I will be racing for the first time with over a 100 other individuals. You picked a real winner...

I tried and was only able to register for CAT 4 waiting list... :(
I'm amazed at how popular this race has become in such a short time. It really does look like an epic event. I'm going to train for it but have no hope of getting in. Good Luck to all. I'm planning to be there either way.
